Women in Afghanistan Reclaim Voice through Poetry

From Afghanistan…, further evidence of the healing power of art. Meanwhile, here in the United States, these kinds of stories ought to serve as cautionary tales to underscore the deleterious effects of cutting funding for the arts. As poetry goes, so do other forms of creativity and expression.

Afghan women reclaim voice through poetry

On Saturday afternoons in Kabul, women read and discuss their poetry. It is a scene repeated across Afghanistan. The women, many of whom have been denied access to education, recite their work, and others write it down.

Not every aspiring poet can attend. Some phone in their work secretly because their families might not approve.

Afghan women say they are worried that the next government might include the Taliban because they could lose some of their new freedoms.

Jennifer Glasse met one group of women who are empowering themselves through poetry.

Below is a poem by Rabia Balkhi a 10th century poet and queen of Afghanistan. The Rabia Balkhi Women’s Hospital in Kabul is named after her.

LOVE
I am caught in Love’s web so deceitful
None of my endeavors turn fruitful.
I knew not when I rode the high-blooded stead
The harder I pulled its reins the less it would heed.
Love is an ocean with such a vast space
No wise man can swim it in any place.
A true lover should be faithful till the end
And face life’s reprobated trend.
When you see things hideous, fancy them neat,
Eat poison, but taste sugar sweet.

I Am An Activist

“I am not an activist in pursuit of recognition or fame. I am not an activist so that strangers will think I am a good person. I am not an activist necause it’s good for business (although more often than not, it is). I am an activist because being an activist makes me feel alive.”… More on this Topic

Dear Deepak…

On May 13, Deepak Chopra penned an article about President Obama vs Mitt Romney for the SFGate newspaper, and sure enough, responses have ranged from effusive (like mine) to upset – with petulant threats of Twitter blocks and never again following his meditations or buying his books!
